Fossicking

Fossicking is the main part of the hobby that all the family can enjoy.
If you live in Queensland the first thing you will need to do is contact the Department of Mines and Energy to acquire a Fossickers Licence.
In this state there are different places designated as fossicking lands. There are also General permission areas. You can fossick on most land provided you have the written permission of the land owner. Fossicking is not permitted on national parks and conservation parks. Some state forest and timber reserves are ok if the authorities have allowed it. The Department of Mines and Energy have a listing of these areas which you should request when you get your licence.

Things you need to take with you when you go fossicking are: hat, sunscreen, medical kit, lots of water and food, pick, and something to carry your rocks. It is good to take kids as they have better eyesight and are closer to the ground than you.
There have been lots of books written on places to go and what you will find in certain locations. There is a link at the bottom of the page of map I have drawn showing the designated fossicking areas in Queensland. If you take up this hobby I would like to wish you all the best and hope you have lots of fun in your endeavour.
